Find out what accent you have

Press record and read this out loud in your normal voice, or just talk about your day:

Hello! I'd like a cup of water and a bowl of rice, please. Last Thursday my brother Robert drove his car to the park, but it was very hot, so we bought three bottles of cold lemonade. Can you tell me what time the next bus leaves?

Or upload a voice clip (MP3, M4A or WAV):

How our AI accent detector works

When you record your voice, our AI listens to the details that make up an accent: how you say vowels, whether you pronounce the "r" at the end of words like "car" and "water", how you say "t" and "th", and the rhythm and melody of your sentences. It then names the accent that matches best, how confident it is, and two other accents your voice could be mistaken for.

Everyone has an accent, including native speakers. There is no right or wrong accent, and our tool never rates how well you speak. It's simply a fun way to learn what makes your voice unique.

Tips for an accurate result

What is an accent?

An accent is the way a group of people pronounce a language. It includes the sounds of vowels and consonants, which syllables get stressed, and the "music" of speech, called intonation. Accents are different from dialects, which also include different words and grammar. For example, a Scottish speaker may use words like "wee" (small), which is part of the dialect, and also pronounce "r" strongly, which is part of the accent.

You pick up your first accent from the people around you as a child, mostly between birth and the early teenage years. If you learn a language later in life, the sounds of your first language usually shape how you speak the new one. That's why people often say a speaker has, for example, a French or Spanish accent in English.

Common English accents

Within each of these, there are many regional accents. The UK alone has dozens of distinct ones, from Scouse in Liverpool to Geordie in Newcastle.

Can you change your accent?

Yes, accents can change. Many people's accents shift naturally when they move to a new place or spend a lot of time with people who speak differently. Actors and language learners also train their accents on purpose by listening carefully, copying native speakers and recording themselves. But you never need to change your accent: being clear and understood matters far more than sounding like anyone else.

Questions

Is my recording saved?

No. Your recording is sent to the AI only to create your result and is not stored on our servers.

Why did the AI guess the wrong accent?

Accents mix and blend, especially if you have lived in several places or speak more than one language. Short or noisy recordings also make it harder. Try a longer recording in a quiet room, and check the "could also be" suggestions.

Does it work for languages other than English?

Yes. Speak in any language and the AI will try to identify both the language and the accent, for example Mexican Spanish or Parisian French. It's most accurate for widely spoken languages.
