Natural Everyday Makeup in 10 Minutes: Step by Step
A simple, ten-minute natural makeup routine for everyday wear, with blending tips and common mistakes to avoid.
A natural makeup look is all about looking like yourself on a good day: even skin, defined brows, a bit of colour and fresh-looking eyes. It's quick, versatile and works for the office, errands or a casual day out. Here's a simple routine you can do in about ten minutes.
Step 1: Prep your skin (1 minute)
Start with clean, moisturised skin. In the morning, apply sunscreen as the last step of your skincare and give it a minute to settle. Makeup goes on more smoothly over hydrated skin.
Step 2: Even out your skin (2 minutes)
- Use a light layer of tinted moisturiser, skin tint or a sheer foundation.
- Apply it where you need it most, usually the centre of the face, and blend outward with fingers, a damp sponge or a brush.
- Match the shade to your neck and jaw, not your hand, and check it in daylight.
Step 3: Conceal only where needed (1 minute)
Dab a little concealer under the eyes, around the nose or on any spots, and tap it in with your ring finger or a small brush. A little goes a long way.
Step 4: Brows (1 minute)
Brush your brows upward with a spoolie. Fill in any sparse areas with light, hair-like strokes using a pencil or powder slightly lighter than your natural brow colour. Set with a clear or tinted brow gel.
Step 5: A touch of colour (2 minutes)
- Blush: smile and apply cream or powder blush to the apples of your cheeks, blending up toward your temples.
- Bronzer (optional): sweep a small amount where the sun naturally hits: forehead, cheekbones and jaw.
Step 6: Eyes (2 minutes)
- Sweep a neutral eyeshadow close to your skin tone across the lid, or skip it entirely.
- Curl your lashes if you like, then apply one coat of mascara, wiggling the wand at the roots.
- For more definition, smudge a brown pencil into the upper lash line.
Step 7: Lips (1 minute)
Finish with a tinted lip balm, a sheer lipstick or a gloss in a shade close to your natural lip colour.
Common mistakes
- Too much foundation: natural makeup is about sheer layers. Build up only where needed.
- Harsh edges: blend along the jaw, hairline and around blush and eyeshadow so nothing has a visible line.
- Shade mismatch: test foundation on your jawline in daylight.
- Over-defined brows: go softer and lighter than you think.
- Skipping prep: dry skin makes makeup cling to flakes.
Hygiene tips
Wash brushes and sponges regularly, replace mascara about every three months, and never share eye products.
