Small Living Room Layout: 9 Tips to Make It Feel Bigger

Nine practical, budget-friendly layout and decor tips to make a small living room feel bigger, brighter and easier to live in.

A small living room can feel cramped, but it doesn't have to. The right layout and a few smart decor choices can make even a compact space feel open and comfortable. Most of these tips cost little or nothing.

1. Start with a focal point

Decide what the room should focus on: a window, a TV, a fireplace or a piece of art. Arrange your main seating to face it. A clear focal point makes a room feel organised rather than crowded.

2. Pull furniture away from the walls

It sounds backwards, but pushing everything against the walls can make a room feel like a waiting room. Floating the sofa even 20 to 30 centimetres away from the wall, or grouping seating around a rug, creates a cosier, more intentional space.

3. Choose furniture with visible legs

Sofas, chairs and cabinets on raised legs let you see more floor, which makes the room feel larger. Bulky pieces that sit right on the floor look heavier.

4. Scale furniture to the room

One oversized sectional can swallow a small room. Look for apartment-sized sofas, armless chairs and nesting tables that tuck away when you don't need them.

5. Keep walkways clear

Leave about 75 to 90 centimetres for main walkways where you can. A room you can move through easily feels bigger than one where you squeeze past furniture.

6. Use a large enough rug

A tiny rug floating in the middle of the room makes the space feel smaller. Choose a rug large enough for at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs to sit on it. It ties the seating area together.

7. Go light and limited with colour

Light, warm neutrals on walls reflect more light. Stick to a palette of two or three main colours and repeat them in cushions, art and accessories so the room looks calm and connected.

8. Add mirrors

A large mirror opposite or beside a window bounces light around the room and creates a sense of depth.

9. Use vertical space

Tall bookshelves, floating shelves and wall-mounted storage draw the eye upward and free up floor space. Hang curtains close to the ceiling and wider than the window to make both look taller.

Lighting matters too

One overhead light makes any room feel flat. Add a floor lamp and a table lamp at different heights for warmth and depth. Read our full layered lighting guide.

Declutter before you decorate

The quickest way to make a room feel bigger is to remove things. Clear surfaces, hide cables, and give everything a home in baskets or closed storage.
