Tree Pose: 7 Tips to Improve Your Balance
Wobbling in Tree Pose? These seven practical tips will help you find steadier balance, plus safe variations for every level.
Tree Pose (Vrksasana) looks simple: stand on one leg with the other foot resting on your standing leg. Yet many people wobble, hop or fall out of it within seconds. Balance is a skill, not a fixed trait, and it improves quickly with the right technique and a little regular practice.
How to do Tree Pose
- Stand in Mountain Pose with your feet hip-width apart.
- Shift your weight onto your left foot.
- Bend your right knee and place the sole of your right foot on your inner left ankle, calf or upper thigh. Avoid placing it directly on the knee joint.
- Press foot and leg into each other to create stability.
- Bring your palms together at your chest, or reach your arms overhead.
- Hold for five to ten breaths, then switch sides.
Tip 1: Fix your gaze on a still point
Your eyes play a big part in balance. Pick a point that isn't moving, about two metres in front of you on the floor or at eye level on a wall, and keep a soft, steady gaze on it.
Tip 2: Spread your standing foot
Lift and spread your toes, then place them back down. Feel the weight spread evenly across your heel, the base of your big toe and the base of your little toe. A wide, active foot is a stable foundation.
Tip 3: Press foot and leg together
Don't just rest your foot on your leg. Press the sole into your inner leg and press the leg back into the foot with equal force. This "hug" engages the muscles that keep you upright.
Tip 4: Keep your hips level
It's common for the hip of the standing leg to jut out to the side. Imagine your pelvis as a bowl of water you don't want to spill. Keep both hip points facing forward and level.
Tip 5: Engage your core lightly
Draw your lower belly gently in and up, as if zipping up a pair of tight jeans. Don't clench; aim for about 20% effort. This connects your upper and lower body.
Tip 6: Start low and build up
There's no rush to put your foot high on your thigh. Begin with your heel on your ankle and your toes on the floor, like a kickstand. When that feels steady, move up to the calf, then the thigh.
Tip 7: Breathe slowly
Holding your breath makes your body stiff, and stiff bodies wobble more. Breathe slowly in and out through your nose. Small wobbles are normal; they are your muscles learning.
Variations
- Using a wall: stand side-on to a wall and rest one hand on it for support.
- Arms overhead: once you're steady, reach your arms up like branches, keeping your shoulders relaxed.
- Eyes closed: an advanced challenge. Try it only near a wall.
How to practise balance during the day
Stand on one leg while brushing your teeth or waiting for the kettle. Thirty seconds on each side, once or twice a day, builds steadiness surprisingly fast.
